Spring Energy in the Studio

Letter from the Publishers

Welcome to the April/May issue of International Artist! As I write this on a cold March day from my hotel room in Cheyenne, Wyoming, much of the country is still deep in winter. Boston is blanketed in snow, and even Central Park has become a winter playground. Yet, we know what comes next—longer days, brighter skies and the unmistakable momentum of spring. For artists, that seasonal shift brings renewed energy, fresh perspectives and wonderful opportunities to create exceptional work.

Beginning on page 31, you’ll find our annual Art Shows & Fairs Guide, a valuable resource for artists looking to share their work and connect with collectors. Exhibitions and art fairs remain an essential part of the artistic ecosystem, offering opportunities to present and sell work, build community and gain career momentum. If you have not yet participated in an art show or fair, perhaps 2026 is the year to take that step.

Throughout this issue, you will also find eight artist demonstrations from around the globe. Each offers insight into different techniques, processes, and the many ways artists interpret the world around them, providing both inspiration and practical guidance for your own work.

Beginning on page 15, our Call for Entries continues an expanded lineup of competitions for 2026. This month’s challenge is Still Life, a timeless subject that allows artists to explore elements like composition, lighting and narrative through everyday objects. Our 2026 prize lineup now exceeds $7,000 in gift cards and awards, and we are pleased to welcome Blick Art Materials and Raymar Panels as sponsors.

Winning artists receive a remarkable package of recognition and opportunity. The Grand Prize includes a two-page spread in International Artist and a four-page feature in American Art Collector, connecting the winner directly with galleries and collectors. Winners also receive a $100 gift certificate from Blick Art Materials, a $100 gift certificate from Raymar, and a signed, framable certificate recognizing their achievement.

Art has always been about discovery—new ideas, new techniques and often discoveries about ourselves along the way. As spring awakens us from our winter sleep, bringing back beauty and color, I wish you good karma and a season full of creativity.

Sincerely,
Wendie Martin & Adolfo Castillo
