Slow Yourself Down

Letter from the Editor

Depending on where you live in the world, it is likely winter right now—and to me, winter is a time for rest and reflection. When animals hibernate, they literally slow their breathing and heart rate, and lower their body temperature and metabolism. It’s a natural, physiological process that occurs each year. I often like to treat this time of year in a similar way. While we don’t go into hibernation like a lot of other mammals, the cold, dark days still seem to have an effect on us. You may feel a little more sleepy, or like you want to stay inside more often. I say embrace it.

I think that this darker, slower time of year is beautiful. It feels like it gives us permission to simply pause (even if just for a moment) and reflect on who we are and where we want to go, especially in our creative lives. As artists, I encourage you to take some time to focus on what you find truly special and valuable in your artistic practice, and then take gentle steps toward fulfilling those values.

Taking care of yourself is taking care of your art. They’re one in the same. When you’re truly refreshed, the creativity will naturally follow. I am looking forward to seeing what you all accomplish throughout the year.

In this February/March issue, I hope you find encouragement and inspiration in the many wonderful demonstrations we have lined up for you, including accomplished oil painter Calvin Liang, Italian still life artist Cansu Rossi, pastelist Lena Rivo from Portugal, Australian watercolorist John Lovett and much more.

Warmly,
