Before sitting down to write, I had to stop and ponder more closely what I’ve been thinking about lately when it comes to art. (I’m always thinking about art, always admiring it, and always feeling inspired by what I see.) Autumn is waking up, and bringing with it a change of pace. I don’t know if it’s simply my imagination, but I seem to be seeing more and more artwork of forest scenes, fall foliage and woodland creatures. Living in the Pacific Northwest, I find these subjects so captivating, both in art and in life. They stir something in my soul.
This morning (as I write this letter), the harshness of the summer gave us a bit of respite with a cloudy, drizzly day. Immediately, I felt compelled to go to my favorite local coffee shop, order a latte and paint. And in these quiet, yet energizing moments, I find myself wondering what inspires all of you? What ignites that spark in you to take out your paints, brushes and pencils, and get to work? (Work doesn’t even feel like the right word, does it?) I’d love to know what you find captivating, or the little moments in your day that bring life to your artist soul. Email me at atidwell@internationalartist.com with your thoughts and stories.
I also hope that you find joy and inspiration within the pages of this magazine. We have a beautiful issue laid out, with demonstrations by esteemed painters like Timothy Rees (Portrait Society of America faculty artist and this issue’s cover artist), as well as Emma Rach-Syslak and Ian Roberts, all of whom work in oils. You can also explore demos by pastelist Jason Morgan, watercolorist Louise De Masi and charcoal artist Rob Harris, who collaborates with his daughter. And be sure to take a look at our Art Book Guide on page 21, and a special feature diving into new works by Martin Wittfooth on page 34.
Warmly,
