Blazing the Trail

International Artist’s inaugural cover artist, watercolorist Alvaro Castagnet

All the way back in 1998 when International Artist first launched, Uruguayan artist Alvaro Castagnet’s watercolor Vernazza Boats graced the magazine’s very first cover. Now, 25 years later, the award-winning artist, author and instructor shares what the experience was like for him.

I am delighted to write about my experience as the inaugural cover artist of International Artist. Seeing my painting grace the cover was a moment filled with both excitement and pride.

And to be honest there was a bit of anxiety as well, as I often can’t help but wonder, “could I have done better?” Sometimes as an artist, you simply can’t help feeling that way—even though Vernazza Boats was well-loved by many people. I guess this sentiment is not necessarily adverse or pessimistic, as it is also the driving force that lifts me up and helps me continuously improve my work.

Being on the cover was a validation of my artistic journey and a recognition of my work on an international platform. Now, reflecting on that time, it brings me joy to know that my art resonated with fellow artists and enthusiasts.

Over the years, being on the cover of International Artist has certainly had a significant impact on my artistic career. It provided me with increased visibility and exposure, allowing me to connect with a broader audience of art lovers. The magazine’s readership has always been passionate about the arts, and their continued support and encouragement have been invaluable to my growth as an artist.

Let me share a little bit about Vernazza Boats. This painting captures the picturesque charm of Vernazza, a beautiful coastal village in Italy’s Cinque Terre region. The boats peacefully resting in the harbor reflect the essence of daily life and the tranquil atmosphere of this enchanting place. While traveling there, I did a small sketch to keep the impression fresh in my mind. I used watercolor as my medium, allowing me to embrace the vibrant colors and the fluidity that defines my style. The dimensions of this piece are 30 by 38 inches, which gave me ample space to convey the character and spirit of Vernazza. —
