Veneta Docheva: Expression and flow

Watercolor is a magical technique and gives unlimited opportunities for expression. When I paint I use all possible watercolor techniques—wet-in-wet, wet-in-dry and dry-in-dry. There is transparency and airiness that can be expressed only with watercolor. I am a self-educated artist in the technique of watercolor and painting in general. This led me to have my own individual style which I feel makes me different and interesting. When I started working with watercolor, it was not a popular technique like it is now. I had to discover a lot of things by myself. Now there are so many training courses, I am doing master classes all over the world. It is much easier, and it takes less time to develop your talents now.

By the wind, watercolor on paper, 15 x 22" (38 x 56 cm) The emotion when we watch the sea cannot be described with words. The feeling of freedom and liberty is exciting. This feeling provokes me to try to re-create it many times on the sheet. Watercolor, as a material, is very suitable for recreating this freedom. This painting is one of my favorite in which I paint the sea.
To the light, watercolor on paper, 21½ x 13½" (55 x 35 cm) To the light is a very emblematic painting for me. It has been the beginning of a new series of paintings with expressive white flowers. In it, for the first time, I have reached freedom and fluency of expression, which has become a part of all my subsequent works. In 2020 this painting won an excellence award during the Malaysia International Online Competition in the “Flora” category.  In 2021 it was chosen to be part of international watercolor exhibition II International Art Festival: World of High Watercolor organized by World of Modern Watercolor in Moscow, Russia.

But for me uniqueness is important. There is a lot of freedom in watercolor technique. Water paints together with the artist, and you just have to let it do what it wants to do and control it just a little. The most important thing when someone paints with watercolor is to be brave. Watercolor allows you to do everything without fear. When I paint, water spills on the paper, the pigments are mixed with water and magic happens. For me the shape and reality are not the most important elements, because everything I paint is related to my emotions and feelings. I use landscapes and flowers to show how much beauty there is around us. I can’t say exactly to which style I belong. My style has elements of impressionism, realism and expressionism. Light is very important to me. It is the main theme in all my paintings. For me, the art would not only reflect the reality, but also give hope, excitement and inspiration. —

Dreams, watercolor on paper, 23½ x 15½" (60 x 40 cm) My unique technique can be seen very well in Dreams. This painting was chosen for a puzzle from the largest manufacturer of puzzles in Bulgaria. Initially I had drawn a couple of similar paintings, but in smaller sizes. Dreams reveals in a wonderful way my inner feeling of freedom.
In the night, watercolor on paper,  22 x 15" (56 x 38 cm) I have had insomnia for many years, and I have been watching the moon for hours. It has become a friend that I love painting. The magic of the night helped me to touch my deepest feelings and express them on the white sheet. In the night is the painting that I will exhibit in one of the world’s largest watercolor events International Watercolor Masters organized by David Poxon in England.
