1. My Open Box M pochade box with palette extender (on the right) and brass brush holder (on the left). This is a 10-by-12-inch pochade, but I can paint up to a 20-inch-wide panel on it. It’s lightweight and versatile. The palette extender gives me more room to mix paint and is where I mix my lightest colors for skies, highlights, etc. I carry it in a soft side carrying case.
2. Raymar panels to paint on. I like the Claessens No. 15 double oil primed surfaces best. These panels are durable and easy to transport outdoors.
3. My Manfrotto BeFree tripod. It folds up into a small carrying case, only about a foot long when folded. Heavy enough to stand up to wind but lightweight enough for a 60-plus-year-old to carry easily.
4. Old ArtBin brush holder. I took out all the brush holder pieces (springs, etc.), and found it’s the perfect size for carrying 37 milliliter tubes of paint. I put a rubber band around it so the paints don’t fall out in my backpack. Fits easily in the backpack and keeps the sharp ends of the paint tubes from puncturing each other and making a mess.
5. Wet painting carriers—a MUST for oil painters especially! If I only need one or two panels I use a PanelPak or EasyL’s ezPak which will hold two panels. These slip easily into my backpack and come in different sizes. If I am going to try to do more than two, I’ll take my Raymar wet painting boxes like the blue one on the right. The one pictured will hold up to 12 small panels, 6 by 6 or 6 by 8 inches. —
